Four Million People in North and East Syria Face Deadly Coronavirus

Four million residents in North and East Syria still have almost no capacity to test for or treat Coronavirus, despite pleas and urgent calls for help to the WHO, the UN, and other international bodies. There is little doubt that COVID-19 is spreading undetected through the region, and leading to illness and death.

Two testing machines and complementary laboratory equipment were graciously supplied by the neighboring Kurdistan Regional Government. A few assorted supplies have been offered to the region from the US Central Command and other organizations. Heyva Sor and the AANES Health Commission are doing heroic work with scant supplies or staff. Despite the availability of testing equipment, hospitals and health centers have capacity for only about 460 active cases of COVID-19, researchers estimate.
